Introduction:
Apprenticeships are a popular choice for young people aged 16 - 24* looking for on-the-job training and the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst earning a wage. Most of your training will be directly linked to the career you have chosen, gaining practical experience in the workplace, backed up by attendance at college.
An Advanced Apprenticeship in Wood Occupations Level 3 will develop your employability skills and give you valuable experience of a variety of routine woodwork related activities. You will be working in a construction environment where your duties could encompass many areas of the construction industry. Your exact duties will depend upon your employer.
Where possible staff from College Apprenticeships Training will find you an employer and a place of work (although students who are already employed are welcome to apply if sponsored by their employer). Your offer of Advanced Apprenticeship training will be dependent upon work placements being available.
An Advanced Apprenticeship is equivalent to 2 'A' Levels.
* Please note priority is given to applicants under 19 years of age. Due to funding arrangements, places may be limited for 19-24 year olds.
Entry Requirements:
You will require an NVQ Level 2 in Wood Occupations.
All applicants will be required to have an initial assessment test, occupational test and attend an interview with the relevant Training Co-ordinator.
Course Details:
To gain the full Apprenticeship you will work towards the following qualifications:
- NVQ Level 3 Wood Occupations
Key Skills in:
- Application of Number Level 2
- Communication Level 2
- (A.C.A) Advanced Construction.Award Technical Certificate
- Health and Safety Test
- Employment Responsibilities and Rights (a workbook to help you understand your rights and responsibilities as an employee and those of your employer)
The NVQ qualification is work-related and will relate specifically to your job role. Mandatory units include:
- VR01 Conform to general workplace safety
- VR209 Confirm work activities and resources for the work
- VR210 Develop and maintain good working relationships
- VR211 Confirm the occupational method of work
One unit of the following six:
- VR09 Install first fixing components
- VR10 Install second fixing components
- VR11 Erect structural carcassing components
- VR24 Erect complex structural carcassing components
- VR25 Maintain non-structural and structural components
- VR26 Set up and use fixed or transportable machinery
Course Assessment:
You will be continually assessed throughout your training. Most of the assessment will take place in the workplace, plus you will take some external tests/examinations for key skills (if required) and technical certificate. Your progress will be reviewed regularly and achievable targets set to ensure you complete your Apprenticeship on time.
Course Progression:
On successful completion of this Advanced Apprenticeship you could progress in your chosen career at supervisory/management level.
Additional Information:
Expect to earn at least £80.00 per week. You may also get help with travel costs but this will depend on your employment status and the terms and conditions of your Advanced Apprenticeship. This will be explained to you prior to commencing with an employer.
While your technical skills and knowledge will develop over the course of your Advanced Apprenticeship you will also need to demonstrate to potential employers that you possess relevant skills and personal qualities and are willing to work and to learn.

- Reliability and flexibility
- Ability to work in a team as well as on your own initiative
