FORMER APPRENTICE NOW MANAGES TRAINING CONTRACT

A member of staff at The Bournemouth and Poole College who was once an Apprentice with CROWN Closures UK 11 years ago now manages their training contract with The College. Paul Domoney, an Apprenticeship co-ordinator for Engineering and Mechanical at The College originally completed an Apprenticeship programme with CROWN Closures and has got to know their company very well so that he can now advise them on their training needs.
CROWN Closures UK based in Hamworthy and a division of Crown Holdings UK makes around 2 million lids (metal closures) a day for many different brands including Heinz, Nestle and Danone. You may even have a number of these jars in your cupboard that can often be recognised by the trademark ‘crown’ printed on the side of the closure.
As well as employing Apprentices in their company CROWN Closures has put their service team through a training programme in order to develop their skills across different departments to ease the pressure on each area when holiday or sickness cover is needed.
Mervyn Thorne, Human Resources Manager at CROWN Closures UK was also Paul’s Apprentice instructor when he originally worked for CROWN Closures and has been working very closely with him again to deliver the NVQ’s in Performing Manufacturing Operations. Mervyn said of the partnership, “We wanted outside accreditation to check our training was working well and carefully structured for the candidates, creating an ongoing training plan. Cross skilling is vital for the service teams and The College has always ensured they deliver what they say they will on time and in a friendly, knowledgeable way.”
Paul Domoney, Apprenticeship co-ordinator added, “It was strange, at first, to be working on the other side, however I feel the knowledge I gained from working in their company enabled us to find the right training and manage the contract in the best way to suit the company. It can be particularly difficult to assess the learners as they all work different shift patterns but we manage the time effectively to meet the requirements of all the team on the programme.”
The College always gets to know a company to ensure that the training being offered is appropriate to their industry and particularly their individual business. For a free training needs analysis of your organisation call the Business Enterprise team on 01202 205500.
