Advanced Apprenticeship Has The Components Of Success
A leading manufacturer of precision machined components for the aerospace and motor sport industries is taking apprenticeship training to a new level, thanks to a partnership with The Bournemouth and Poole College. Higar Engineering, based in New Milton is the first to take on an Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering through College Apprenticeship Training. This level 4 qualification is equivalent in standard to degree level, and is the highest level of apprenticeship currently available in the UK.
Employing over sixty people, Higar Engineering is regarded as the UK’s leading manufacturer of these specialist components and complex assemblies and has been working with The College, taking on several apprentices over the years to help move their business forward.
Rod Hall, Team Leader, said, “Traditionally, the engineering industry has always welcomed apprenticeships as they offer an excellent way to bring on new talent and teach young people the wide range of specialist and technical skills required. Our company operates a continuous improvement model, and that applies both to training and developing our staff as well as investing in machinery and technologies that keep us at the forefront of the sector. It is exciting to see apprenticeships go through to this very high level.”
Samuel Shore, 21, from Poole has been recruited onto the advanced apprenticeship and is impressing his bosses. Rod added, “Sam excels himself in the role; he is like a sponge, learning and picking up new knowledge and is keen to make further progress. As a company, we see the potential that many young people have, bringing fresh blood and new ideas. Our work experience students are also given projects to get involved with and they are often very adept and creative.”
The company has recently been branching out into motor sport, and is the only company in the UK to manufacture the AV8-B Harrier jumpjet. Components made in their Hampshire factory are also supplied to Bentley and other top of the range manufacturers, giving all engineering staff exposure to a wide range of high-specification production.
The Bournemouth and Poole College’s Business Enterprise team support a number of companies in the region with their training and recruitment, and are available to offer a training consultancy service free of charge.
