Pathway Programme

6_237The Pathway programme is a full-time course for school leavers with severe learning disabilities and/or difficulties.

Entry to the programme

16-18 from school

There are links with special, residential and comprehensive schools and their Connexions Advisers in Bournemouth, Poole, Dorset and Hampshire.  The College provides link programmes which provide opportunities for initial assessment of a student's potential for college education programmes.

Students from out of county

Some learners arrive from out of county residential provision or may move into the area with their families.  Depending on time of application, students are interviewed and are invited to attend a link programme, initial assessment, starter school and a shadowing day.

Programme Curriculum

The programme aims to develop social skills, communications skills and self-advocacy skills. It offers a wide range of activities and experiences both in the College and in the local community that are relevant to everyday life.

The three structure of the course provides an opportunity for flexibility within each subject area and means that students can be placed into a group which is appropriate for the ability level. Students work towards basic pre-entry skills and the Essential Skills Award.

Learners also get involved in realistic work projects such as 'The Sandwich Scheme' cafe and the High Mead Community Farm.

Communication Skills and Support Needs

To ensure that our learners have the best teaching and support, there are a few additional points that we think you need to know:
  • Learners have weekly group tutorials and 1-1 sessions with personal tutors for support and encouragement.
  • A speech therapist attends college on a weekly basis;
  • Staff have regular weekly team meetings to discuss students' welfare and progress;
  • Course co-ordinators meet regularly to ensure that best practice and college systems are followed.
