Students on the Cake Decoration and Wired Sugar Flower courses at The Bournemouth and Poole College recently competed at the Cake International - The Sugarcraft and Cake Decoration Show held at the NEC Birmingham.

They were up against international and UK demonstrators and competitors to win an array of awards. Sarah Baxter won Gold for senior decorated cake in all decoration being edible category, On Yee Li won silver for a decorated sugar paste cake with a flower spray and Kohilavaani Paranthaman won silver for decorated cake in all decoration being edible category. On top of this Kohilavaani also won bronze for a container of 4 types of flowers and a highly commended for a suitable arrangement for a church pew.

Dawn Pennington, Lecturer on the course who accompanied the students commented, “All the displays were fantastic and highlighted the intricate work that goes into each design. We were delighted with our awards. The courses teach you great skills that can then be used on cakes for your own special occasions with many students choosing to take it up as a career.”

The event organisers bought together the very best in cake decoration with experts from home and abroad with a grand display of a 12ft Cinderella Coach and four horses, complete with a sparkly, cobbled road produced by Pat Russell and members of the Birmingham British Sugarcraft Guild.

The College is hosting an inter-college cake decoration competition for colleges across the south on Friday 16th April 2010, the public are invited to come in and view the entrants’ pieces between 2-5pm at The Escoffier Restaurant, Lansdowne.
