The Bournemouth and Poole College has recently introduced a new Student Ambassador Programme along the lines of similar schemes regularly seen in universities.

Twenty one ambassadors recently attended their induction and training programme and are now ready to get involved in a wide range of activities in the New Year. Julie-Anne Houldey, college Marketing Director said, “We’ve got a great bunch of dedicated, motivated and enthusiastic students who are going to help with a range of different events. Mainly their role is to welcome visitors and prospective learners when they come into our information and open days or at school visits, and also to help newly enrolled students feel quickly at home.”

“The students range in age and are on different courses, but what they have in common is shared experiences of college life, and they want to communicate that to other people who are thinking about their future options.”

The training will also be beneficial to the ambassadors when they come to apply for university or for employment. The Ambassadors have to commit to customer service standards, set and agreed by the group, and undertake a set number of duties throughout the year, for which they will receive a small bursary. They are also set to receive training to enable them to take part in lesson observations and feedback to lecturers, plus will support the HR team with staff recruitment.

College Principal, Lawrence Vincent added, “Having met the group I was immediately impressed by their maturity, and delighted that they are getting so much out of their time at The College. Peer influence is very powerful, and young people and adult learners will benefit from having a Student Ambassador they can relate to. This is an exciting new project for us, and personally I am looking forward to working with the Ambassadors to help us continuously make life better for our students.”
