Retail students from Christchurch, Bournemouth and Poole secondaries need your help to prove their business worth.

They are appealing to businesses and the community to help boost stock at their Saxon Square unit in Christchurch, which they plan to run as a profitable shop from July 12 to 16.

Companies including Regatta, Lush, Craghoppers, and Oswald Bailey have already offered to support the 25 students in their enterprise with clothing, cosmetics, gift ware and books.

The scheme, organised by Retail SkillShop Dorset, managed by The Bournemouth and Poole College, allows the year 10 pupils to use their City & Guild retail training in a realistic hands-on environment to develop the skills retailers want.

Every step of the process mirrors the real retail environment with students interviewed for the various jobs in-store, and tasked with not only making a profit from their venture but a sustainable one.

“The money these students make will be re-invested to develop the future retail workforce and raise the profile and public perception of the profession,” said Mandy Payne, Retail SkillShop co-ordinator.

“The Retail SkillShop Dorset is committed to developing first class retail skills across Bournemouth, Dorset and Poole and by supporting these young people you are directly helping the future of retail across the region.”

The majority of the pupils come from Twynham School with the rest from Glenmoor and Ashdown.

Rob Palmer, assistant head at Twynham and chair of the School Retail Group, said:

“We work directly with employers to give the students practical and realistic vocational learning.

“With the retail students this means mystery shopping exercises in Christchurch and visual merchandising at Haskins.”
