Students from the Watersports and Surf Academy at The Bournemouth and Poole College are celebrating their success at becoming the British College Sport National Watersports Champions at the recent contest held in Cornwall.
The event, now in its second year, was hosted by Cornwall College, and competitors from affiliated colleges across the UK challenged each other in a range of disciplines including sailing, kayaking, wind surfing, a biathlon, surfing and body boarding.
Ivan Darley, programme manager at The Bournemouth and Poole College Watersports Academy commented “I am really proud of them all, this is a brilliant accolade for the Watersports and Surf Academy teams. Winning this national competition reflects the dedication and commitment of our students. Competitions like this enhance the learning experience and rewards all the hard work put in by the students and staff in their coaching and training. The students have all been really dedicated and winning this competition will be excellent for their CV and their future development.”
The students’ high individual rankings resulted in The College gaining a very strong point lead over its competitors. From the Watersports Academy Jessica Kesik gained 1st in Windsurfing, Brianne Wright received a 3rd in the Sailing Event, George Carter came 4th in Kayaking, with Kayaking novices Rebekah Edcenbrow and Brianne Wright gained joint first. In the Biathlon event Bethany Dear gained 1st place in the female section and Sam Jeffrey came 2nd in the male section.
From The College’s Surf Academy Rhiannon Phillips-Jones was first in the female competition with Casey Burgess and Liam Gallagher gaining 3rd and 4th consecutively in the male competition.
Ivan added, “Since launching the Watersports and Surf Academies our students have gone from strength to strength. It is a fantastic opportunity for young sports enthusiasts to develop their abilities whilst gaining an academic qualification.
Academy members are encouraged to take advantage of the south coast’s many facilities and natural resources, and to get involved in a broad range of water sports focusing on sailing, and including windsurfing, powerboating, kayaking and Surfing. Students can also study towards land sport qualifications.”
